What is Zakat-ul-Fitr (Fitrana)?
Zakat-ul-Fitr is different from the annual Zakat payment and is due before the end of Ramadan or before Eid prayers.
The Zakat-ul-Fitr donation is traditionally given as food; at Khidmat Foundation, we make it easy to make your Fitrana donation to be used for less fortunate persons as necessary food products .
The amount was determined by The Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) as equivalent to one Saa’ or four Mudds weight of food. one Saa’ of staple food on behalf of yourself and each person you are responsible for. What is a Saa’? A Prophetic saa’ is not a weight measurement. It was and still is a measurement of volume and one Saa’ is made up of four Mudds. To be precise, a Prophetic Mudd in modern volume measurements is 0.75L (or 750ml), which means that a Saa’ is of three litres (0.75×4= 3.0 liters).
Example – A man has a wife and two children, and his parents have asked him to give out zakaat al-fitr for them too. So he needs to give out 6 units, or 6 saa’s , of food.
Step 1: Determine how much one saa’ (3 litres) of the selected food item is. The man in our example decides to use barley. He can either measure out three liters of barley in a large measuring pitcher, or measure out 3 liters of barley in a measuring container and weigh this amount. This is one saa’ of that barley. Let’s say in this example 3 liters of the selected barley weighed 2 kilograms. The weight of one saa’ of that specific kind of barley would be 2 kilograms.
Step 2: Multiply the measurement from step 1 by the number of people you are giving Zakat-al-fitr on behalf of. i.e. 6×2=12 kilograms.
This is calculated in India at approximately Rs. 32 (Changeable) per person if we calculate it on the basis of Rupees.
Zakat-al-Fitr, or Fitrana, is paid by any adult Muslim.
