What is Fidyah?
Fidyah is a compulsory charitable donation which must be made if you are unable to fast during Ramadan. Paying Fidyah for not fasting is most commonly necessary for the elderly or sick, who are unable to fast safely due to medical concerns or issues. In this situation, making a payment to support and feed the poor is necessary instead of keeping the fast, and this is called Fidyah.
When an individual pays Fidyah, they should aim to donate funds enough to feed a poor person two whole meals. This is cumulative, meaning that if an individual misses multiple days of fasting due to medical concerns, travel or concerns outside of their control, they must fund two meals for a poor person, for every day of fasting missed.
Feeding someone in need in this way relinquishes the religious obligation upon you. When you are unable to make up your fast, you can provide food and nutrition to someone living in poverty by paying Fidyah. Charity donations such as these are essential for making up a missed obligation and for providing for those less fortunate than ourselves.
How Much is Fidyah for Ramadan 2021?
The Fidyah amount for 2021 is Rs 400 (changeable) per day where a fast has been missed, and this equates to Rs. 12,000 for the entire month. This will provide an individual living in poverty with two nutritious meals which could not only bring hope and happiness but save lives too.
Who is Eligible to Pay Fidyah 2021?
You may have missed or been exempt from fasting due to pregnancy, illness, old age or any other reason which prevents you from making the fasts up later. If you fall into any of these categories, then you must strive to pay Fidyah before your missed fast.
“(The prescribed fast is for) a certain number of days. Whoever among you does not fast on those days because you are sick or on a journey, then (you should fast) the same number of days on other days. Those who are able to fast are also required to pay a fee (which is equivalent to the cost) of feeding a desperate person. ” (Al-Baqarah 2:184)
What If I Miss My Fast Without a Valid Reason?
If you miss a fast without an appropriate reason then you are not eligible for paying Fidyah. Instead, you should pay Kaffarah, which is the act of either fasting for 60 continuous days or feeding 60 poor individuals for each missed fast. You can learn more about Kaffarah payment here.
